2012 is an apocalypse movie. It touches on the end-of-world scenario and in terms of the storyline, 2012 presents a unique story.
Apparently long time ago, the Mayan civilisation have predicted the date of the-end-of-world. How the Mayan came to this finding was not clear, but the said date matches the year 2012 in our modern calendar. So this spawns many theories about what to happen, whether the Kiamat/ Armageddon/ end of the world will occur on this date.
There were many end-of-the-World films produced previously but none of them touched the perspective 2012 is showing. In most films, the favourite scenarios of end-of-

the-world are global warming, meteor and alien invasion. Remember Waterworld (1995) and The Day after Tomorrow (2004). Both of these films dealt with global warming. Whilst Waterworld presents global flood scenario, The Day after Tomorrow touches on global ice storm.
Meteor is also a favourite subject amongst filmmakers. Remember Deep Impact and Armageddon (both were screened in 1998). The Independence Day (1996) and War of the World (2005) are amongst the films discussing the scenario of alien invasion.
In 2012, the storyline takes the Mayan prophecy and shows its version of the end-of-world-scenario. I think the 2 key scenes in 2012 gives a very strong fear of the end-of-world scenario. One is the portrayal of a group of fearful yet composed monks in Tibet, sounding alarm bells to warn the population about the impending waves of water. Second is the portrayal of how the United State’s navy aircraft carrier is carried by the water and turned over. Watch the trailer.
